EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing)

- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a well-researched and successful psycho-therapeutic technique for treating PTSD, complex trauma, anxiety, depression, and a variety of other problems and disorders. It is based on the understanding that when traumatic or adverse events occur, the brain often blocks processing of them and stores the original thoughts, sounds, feelings, and images of the event. When these sensations are triggered in the present, they can feel like they are happening all over again, almost like a "reliving" of past trauma. See EMDRIA for more details.
- During a session, the therapist gently asks a client to revisit thoughts, feelings, and sensations related to the traumatic incident while receiving bilateral stimulation (BLS) by following eye movements or holding buzzing tappers in each hand. As sensations arise during the session, they are processed by the bilateral stimulation and replaced with safer and more compassionate self-thoughts and feelings which allow the client to feel more distant from the memory.
- EMDR has been endorsed by the American Psychological Association, the Veterans Administration, and the World Health Organization as a preferred treatment for PTSD.
- Super Resourcing, developed by Alison Teal, flips traditional EMDR on it's head. Instead of reliving the historical trauma(s) of the past, this model focuses on treating your inner world by building resilience and strength, offering protective resources to parts of your self that need to heal.
- Low self-esteem and confidence
- Relationship and intimacy issues
- Difficult life transitions such as separation and divorce
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Complicated grief and loss
- Complex childhood trauma and attachment disorders
- Phobias
- Addictions and compulsive behaviors
Ketamine (KAP), Psychedelic Assisted Therapy
- There are times when no amount of talking seems to help a deep wound. In this case KAP can be a possible option for help.
- I have partnered with Journey Clinical in order to offer safe, effective, and professional care to interested clients.
- Typically, clients will have two to three intention setting sessions (based on individual histories and needs), a journey session, and then two to three integration setting sessions.
- Feel free to contact me for a free 15 minute consultation if you would like to discuss KAP further
Who I treat...
Adults
Adults
- Times of transition leave many feeling stressed and unable to manage in the ways that are expected. During challenging times it can be helpful to sort out thoughts and feelings with someone who can help you see patterns in behaviors or thought processes, identify maladaptive coping tools and to brainstorm plans for the future.
- When working with adults I offer therapies such as EMDR, Super Resourcing, FLASH, Attachment theory, KAP, and relational work as well. My goal is to provide you with a space to explore any life transitions you may be embarking upon. I offer deep listening, loads of compassion, and a strong belief that we all know what is best for ourselves, sometimes it's just hard to envision.
- Sometimes it may feel as if you and your child spend all your time arguing, or your child is suddenly acting out at school and teachers are calling regularly. Perhaps there has been a sudden death in the family, or a recent move. When working with children I often utilize EMDR, art, social stories, play therapy and lots of listening to both kids and their parents.
- Frequently an issue arises in a family not because of the actions of just one person, but because of the interactions between the different members of the family. In this case the best approach is to include multiple family members - or even the entire family - so that the issues may be discussed from all sides and understanding can grow.
- With very young families I use infant parent therapy. Infant parent therapy offers an opportunity for families that are struggling with connection to develop more secure attachments with each other, while sorting out some of the underlying issues that may make connection difficult. Additionally, I can offer basic developmental assessments, psychoeducation, intervening with other agencies, and brainstorming practical strategies for getting through hard times.
